Year of Science

To celebrate the 2016-17 Year of Science (led by German Ministry for Education and Research), we invited young people to apply to join a youth seminar on the 2016-17 theme of ‘Seas and Oceans’. The seminar was organised in collaboration with the British Council in Germany.

What was the Seas and Oceans youth seminar about?

50 young people from the UK and Germany met on a three-day seminar in and around Hamburg from 20-22 October 2017. They had the opportunity to discuss current issues and challenges facing our environment, seas and oceans. The UK participants worked together with young people from Germany to explore how these issues impact us, our communities and our future.

Activities included an excursion to Hamburg harbour, the mudflats and expert-led workshops on:

  • ocean litter - why it matters
  • rising sea levels - challenges facing us and our world
  • biodiversity / ocean literacy - looking at the impact on our lives and wildlife

Who took part?

Participants aged 15-18 from around UK and Germany took part in the youth seminar. German language skills were not required.
