In the 1970's, the famous German band Ton Steine Scherben provided the springboard for a very successful singer and songwriter - Rio Reiser. All through his life, he was politically active and also engaged in the squatter scene in Berlin. After the band split up in 1985, he wrote and performed most of his songs entirely by himself and critics say that he changed the stereotype image of German folk music to music that was "simply for the people". The band Ton Steine Scherben is today considered to have been one of the first genuine German-language rock bands ever.

His music inspires German bands to this day, and two of his most successful songs have recently been covered by the bands Freundeskreis and Echt.
