Another of my favourite books that I would like to introduce to you are Die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt and Und heut ist Montag, both by Eric Carle:

Und heut ist Montag

This is how I introduce the book Die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt by Eric Carle and how a series of lessons will lead to the reading of this book in class.

Before reading the book...

Initially I teach the children a poem called 'Die Raupe' using a caterpillar toy:

Seht die Raupe kriecht daher,
auf dem Ast,
das ist sehr schwer!
Seht die Raupe,
frißt und frißt,
bis ganz dick die Raupe ist.

I introduce the vocabulary over several sessions and the children learn the repetitive phrase:

Aber satt war sie noch immer nicht.

Introducing fruit vocabulary:

I introduce the following words, using picture flashcards of the 5 fruits in the story:

  • der Apfel (die Äpfel)

  • die Birne (die Birnen)

  • die Apfelsine (die Apfelsinen)

  • die Erdbeere (die Erdbeeren)

  • die Pflaume (die Pflaumen)

I have made a set of small cards for each fruit and each child receives one card. We sit in a circle.

Then we play: Zeigt mir….

  • e.g. die Erdbeeren, die Pflaumen...

Then we play the game Obstsalat. Sitting in a circle I say:

  • e.g. Erdbeeren wechseln mit Birnen....

At the end I shout Obstsalat and everyone has to change places.
