Professional development and German immersion

This page contains general information about the German Pupil Courses and the application procedure for group leaders. If you are interested in applying to act as a group leader, please read all the information on this page, then download the application form and send it to UK-German Connection by Monday, 8 March 2010.

About the courses

The German Pupil Courses are 2-week courses in Germany consisting of 12 pupils and one accompanying teacher each. The courses are run by the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst (PAD) and administered in the UK by UK-German Connection. They are a fantastic opportunity for pupils to get first-hand experience of German life and culture and improve their German language skills at the same time.

Where and when do the courses take place?

The 2010 courses will take place in three different locations in Germany: Wolfsburg, Cuxhafen and Alzey, in the period mid-end August 2010. The exact dates will be confirmed shortly.

Group leadership opportunities

Three posts are available for qualified UK teachers with experience of teaching German up to A-Level, or equivalent, to act as group leaders on the German Pupil Courses 2010. They provide an excellent opportunity for professional development, and two weeks of immersion into German language and culture.

Please refer to the German Pupil Course pupil information page for details about this year’s courses and the application procedure for pupils: www.ukgermanconnection.org/gpc

What does group leadership on the German Pupil Courses entail?

  • Course option 2 is for younger pupils, aged 14 to 16 who are in year 10 (England, Wales) / year 11 (Northern Ireland) / S3 (Scotland)

Duties of the group leader include:

  • Responsibility for the welfare of 12 UK pupils during their stay in cooperation with the German organiser
  • Responsibility for accompanying the group to and from Germany
  • Assistance to the German organiser through the provision of 1-2 hours of tuition every week-day, working with small groups and attending discussions and excursions as incorporated into the programme
