A joint curriculum video project

Retelling the tale of the Pied Piper in a joint video project with children in North Germany was an exciting creative challenge for pupils from Great Creaton Primary School in Northampton.

Preparations for the film

This joint curriculum project, carried out in cooperation with Grundschule Wettbergen in Lower Saxony, provided a real focus for language development in both schools and incorporated elements of history, art and ICT. The visit to Germany was the culmination point of a years’ preparatory work in both schools. Pupils in Northampton studied the text and the German tradition of the tale of Pied Piper and prepared the props and story boards for the film in advance.

The 11 pupils who went to Germany explored the medieval town of Hamelin and, together with their German friends, created the final product of the project: the film!

The film in the making

To find out how it was done and how the cooperation with the German children worked, have a look at the project description.

Enthusiasm for German

The pupils came back to the UK with an even greater enthusiasm for German, which is now rubbing off on the rest of the class. They have a greater knowledge of the language and a high motivation to try out their new German words. In addition, visual displays around the school in Northampton explain about the Pied Piper project and are making German more popular amongst all students.

A successful project

Apart from being inspirational in the process of encouraging language development and ICT skills, the project has produced a strong link with the German school and many useful curriculum resources.

The film about Pied Piper of Hamelin was shown at the Guilsborough Film Festival to an audience from surrounding schools, and was a tremendous success! Watch the video.
