Merseyside - Rothenburg

Learning about Germany Learning about Germany

In April 2004, 15 pupils from different schools in Merseyside had a great week in Rothenburg, southern Germany. What was special about their trip was the fact that the childrens' parents also came along. Parents and kids got to know Germany and even went to school together, so for everyone, the trip was very exciting!

The children made lots of friends. They visited museums and interesting places and even met the Mayor of Rothenburg. But why say any more, when the kids themselves can tell you all about it!

Easter Egg hunt Easter Egg hunt

As the first thing in the morning, we had German lessons, with a lady called Isolde. After lunch we played outside, until the German children arrived. Together, we enjoyed walking around Rothenburg and working out the questions for a quiz called Stadt-Ralley.

When we came back, we had dinner and afterwards an Easter egg hunt. That was my favourite! I learned the German word for Easter bunny: it's 'Osterhase'. In Germany, kids paint real eggs and the Easter bunny hides them in the garden.

We are staying in an old spa called the Wildbad. To get up there, you have to climb a lot of stairs.

The night watchman The night watchman

This morning I had a nice breakfast. Then I got ready for the lessons with Isolde, our teacher. In the lessons we learned about animals and the months in German.

In the afternoon we went to the crime museum. We also met our friends, the German children. They are really nice. I have a friend called Sarah. She is really friendly.

Tonight we are going to meet a night watchman! It might be a bit scary, I don't know?

At the zoo At the zoo

Today we had a tour around Nürnberg. We saw a Glockenspiel (mechanical bells), where some figures came out to hit the bells at 12 o'clock. I hadn't seen them anywhere else before.

In the afternoon we went to the zoo and saw elephants, giraffes, dolphins and tigers. My Lieblingstiere (favourite animals) are monkeys. I also enjoyed watching the penguins.

Ready for bed! Ready for bed!

All the children were excited this morning, as we were going to the swimming pool, where we played ball.

After lunch we went on a walk with a guide called Sophie. The weather was nice and warm. Half way around, we went to a beer garden, where we had ice cream, drinks and cake.

In class In class

This morning I tried hot chocolate and I loved it. Then we had German lessons.

In the afternoon we went to the Christmas museum. It was brilliant. After that we went to a wine cellar, but we only drank juice.

In the evening we played football. What a win! 4 goals for me, as we beat the adults 7 - 5!
