Discussing the German and British school system
The role of the thematic workshops during the German Pupil Courses is to provide UK and German pupils with the opportunity to work together in both languages and discuss interesting themes. Here you can read what pupils from both countries discussed and what they feel the ideal school of the future or 'Schule der Zukunft' should be.
1. What does the German school system look like? Wie sieht das deutsche Schulsystem aus?
Primary School:
German pupils attend primary school for four years and then the type of school they go to depends on their performance level. Germany has several possibilities.
Zuerst besuchen alle Schüler zusammen für vier Jahre die Grundschule. Danach wird ihnen, je nach Leistungsstand, eine der weiterführenden Schulen empfohlen, doch die Wahl ist ihnen letztendlich selbst überlassen.
Hauptschule:
This type of school is for less academic pupils. After nine years they take the 'Hauptschulabschluss' exam.
Auf die Hauptschule kommen die Schüler mit dem niedrigsten Leistungsstand. Nach neun Jahren können sie die Prüfung zum Hauptschulabschluss ablegen.
Realschule:
A Realschule is for pupils of middle ability - they take the 'Realschulabschluss' after ten years. After this, they can go to a Gymnasium, but they must repeat the tenth class.
Auf die Realschule kommen die Schüler mit einem mittleren Leistungsstand und nach zehn Jahren machen sie ihren Realschulabschluss. Danach können sie auf das Gymnasium wechseln, müssen dort aber die zehnte Klasse wiederholen.
Gymnasium:
A Gymnasium is for students of higher ability. After twelve years, they take their 'Abitur', the highest qualification in Germany. They then leave school. After nine or ten years, the students are automatically awarded their 'Haupt-' or 'Realschulabschluss' without taking the exam.
Auf das Gymnasium kommen die Schüler mit dem höchsten Leistungsstand. Dieses können sie nach zwölf Jahren mit den Prüfungen für das Abitur, welches in Deutschland der höchste Abschluss ist, beenden. Nach neun bzw. zehn Jahren erhalten die Schüler automatisch ihren Haupt- bzw. Realschulabschluss.
Gesamtschule:
Any pupils can go to a 'Gesamtschule'. At this type of school there are different courses for certain subjects to accommodate pupils of different abilities. The pupils can choose which exam to take and when to finish their school career.
Außerdem gibt es noch die Gesamtschule, die jeder Schüler besuchen kann. Dort werden manche Fächer, je nach Leistungsstand, in A- und B-Kurse eingeteilt. An dieser Schule können die Schüler selbst entscheiden, nach wie vielen Jahren und mit welchem Abschluss sie sie beenden.
