For two weeks in January 2005, I went to stay with my friend Julieann, in Herefordshire. This was my first visit to Herefordshire, which is England's most rural county and it was beautiful, even in winter!
Whilst I was there, I visited two really happy and friendly primary schools. Every morning I traveled to Ashperton school to help the Orange Class (Year 2) to learn a little bit about German and Germany and in the afternoons I went to Ledbury school to work with three Year 2 classes - 2SB, 2MW and 2RU.
All the children and teachers were so kind to me and made me feel very welcome. On the first day, within the first five minutes, they learned to say, "Herzlich Willkommen!" to me and that made me feel very much at home!
The children were very enthusiastic and worked so hard over the two weeks. I helped them to learn how to say who they were, how old they were, how to talk about their family and pets and all about colours and numbers. We really enjoyed singing the Happy Birthday song in German and that was a good thing because there were six birthdays over the two weeks that I was there!
Every day, I was allowed to sit with one of the children in the lesson and they helped me to understand the teacher and I was able to whisper to them about the German words and phrases we were learning. Julieann didn't mind, in fact she was absolutely delighted with the progress all the children made!
I really loved my time in Herefordshire and I'm hoping to be able to visit some other schools in the area soon.
Viele Grüße! Alex, der Bär
