Dear Max and Molly

"What do German kids like to eat at tea time and when do they have it?"

Kerri

Dear Max and Molly

Max

Dear Kerri,

In Germany, we call supper Abendessen. Whenever my mum asks me what I would like for Abendessen, I always say 'Pizza, bitte!' We usually eat at around 6pm, so I always have to leave the playground at 5.30pm.
When we go to my grandparents, we sometimes have Kaffee und Kuchen in the afternoon. We eat cake together and the grown-ups have coffee while I drink a heiße Schokolade (hot chocolate).

Dear Max and Molly

"Do German kids have to go to school all year?"

Emma

Dear Max and Molly

Max

Dear Emma,

No, we don't have to go to school all year. We have holidays in autumn, for Christmas and for 'Karneval', the carnival season in February. Click here to read more about the way we celebrate Karneval. We also get two weeks off for Easter and for Pentecost – and in summer, we have six weeks to spend at the Freibad, the swimming pool, without having to worry about school. That's pretty nice, isn't it?

Max

Dear Max and Molly

"What are the major imports and exports in Germany?"

Claire

Dear Max and Molly

Max

Dear Claire,

You may have already seen some German major exports on British streets: cars! Germany's main car exports include BMW, Merdedez-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche. However some of my toys and clothes were not produced in Germany. Most of them are actually imported from the Far East.

Max

Dear Max and Molly

"Molly, do you wish you lived in Germany?"

Sarah

Dear Max and Molly

Molly

Dear Sarah,

when I talk to Max he often tells me about Germany and all the interesting things you can experience in Hamburg, where he lives.
My school has a partner school in Germany and they organise exchange visits every year. I am still a bit young, but in a few years I would love to go to Germany and live there for a while.

Molly

Dear Max and Molly

"Can you tell me the colours of the German flag?"

Amie

Dear Max and Molly

Max

Dear Amie,

The German flag consists of three colours: black, red and gold. Those are the national colours of Germany. The colours come from the uniforms of German soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars in the 19th century.

Max

Dear Max and Molly

"What pop group is most popular in Germany?"

Amie

Dear Max and Molly

Molly

Dear Amie,

There are various pop groups in Germany which are quite popular at the moment. Lots of my German friends really like Tokio Hotel. During the last few years, the group has won a lot of awards and they are now even stars in the USA. Can you believe some of them just turned twenty?

Dear Max and Molly

"Is Germany a big country and are there loads of people that live there?"

Charlotte

Dear Max and Molly

Max

Dear Charlotte,

Yes, Germany is a big country. With 82 million people, it has the largest population of all the countries in the European Union.
Some of the big cities like Berlin, Hamburg or Frankfurt can be a bit crowded sometimes but there are also many rural areas with small villages of just over a few hundred people.

Max

Dear Max and Molly

"Where is the German language spoken? Is it just spoken in Germany, or is it also spoken in countries around it?"

Rebecca

Dear Max and Molly

Molly

Dear Rebecca,

German is mainly spoken as a native language in Germany, but it is also spoken in Austria and in parts of Switzerland. It is even spoken as a native language in parts of Africa, too!

Molly

Dear Max and Molly

"I just wanted to ask what kind of food is there in Germany and what is the difference between German food and British food?"

Jessica

Dear Max and Molly

Max

Dear Jessica,

One great difference between English and German food is the bread. There are lots of different kinds of bread in Germany, from light wheat bread to whole-grain bread like Pumpernickel.
Germans eat a lot of bread, especially for dinner (often topped with cheese or salami).

Dear Max and Molly

"What is the tallest mountain in Germany?"

Rebecca

Dear Max and Molly

Molly

Dear Rebecca,

The highest mountain in Germany is the Zugspitze, which is located in the Bavarian Alps near the border to Austria. It has a height of 2,962 metres (9,718 ft) and it is possible for tourists to go to the peak by a cog railway.

Molly

Dear Max and Molly

"How old is Germany and when was it discovered?"

Tom

Dear Max and Molly

Max

Dear Tom,

Germany was first unified as a nation-state in 1871. Before then, it was a group of smaller states, each with a prince ruling over it. Imagine that!

Max

Dear Max and Molly
