Plastic pollution in Europe

Two schools with a long-standing school partnership of over 20 years are now looking at the impact that leaving the EU will have on the European scientific community and policies on the environment.

Happening Right Now!

Carmel College, in Darlington, are working with their German partner, Gustav Heinemann Gesamtschule in Mülheim an der Ruhr this summer, to evaluate environmentally friendly plastic-waste solutions in their European science project.

While hosting their German partners, both UK and German pupils will carry out practical work on breaking down synthetic plastics in science lessons and discuss easier solutions for this in mixed groups. They’ll compare them to bioplastics. Both groups will look at the need for the public to be more aware of these issues and evaluate European guidelines for recycling plastics. Throughout the project, they will analyse the environmental impact of plastic waste.

During the visit, UK and German pupils will visit the River Tees and carry out a plastics and biodiversity survey of the local surroundings. Pupils will also analyse the data that they collect and debate the responsibilities and challenges of recycling in both countries. The young people will then round off the project with a ‘conference-style presentation’ to local MPs, press, parents and staff.

Both groups will be able to share their project outcomes after the return visit in autumn this year!
