A creative collaboration
Report by Theresa Threadgall, teacher at St Marys RC School
A creative collaboration between schools in Newcastle and Gelsenkirchen
This project was centred upon a performance by St Mary's Roman Catholic Comprehensive School in Newcastle, co-produced by the Theatre Royal, at the Theater Schafft (Theatre works) Partner Festival in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
New partnerships for Ruhr 2010
A partnership between the school and Theatre Royal Newcastle was forged when the Theatre became an official partner of the Ruhr Region in programming the European City of Culture year in 2010. A number of new contacts were made with organisations in the Ruhr region, and an invitation was extended to a school on Tyneside to participate in the Gelsenkirchen Theatre Festival. Links were also forged with the Droste-Hülshoff Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen, which collaborated on the production.
Delights of the festival
The seven-day festival featured young performers from several different countries and involved schools from Ireland, Poland, Germany and the UK. The Theatre Royal-St Marys RC partnership was the only UK representative that year. Participants brought various productions from across the spectrum of the performing arts, and the festival also encouraged skills sharing and the creation of sustainable, lasting cultural links. Provision was also made for the development of language skills and the St Mary's pupils participated in events in both English and German.
